Canadian Society for Independent Radio Production Meeting of the Board March 3, 1998 By Telephone: In Ottawa, Ontario: Victoria Fenner, Barry Rueger In Hamilton, Ontario: Andy Posthumus In Brandon, Manitoba: Dave Kattenburg Regrets: John Hall (Toronto); John Muir (Peterborough): Hal Doran (Ottawa) Minutes recorded by Barry. 1. Call to Order - The meeting was called to order by Andy at 8 PM Ontario Time, 7 PM Manitoba Time. 2. Agenda - The Agenda was developed as we proceeded. 3. Financial Statement: "A sock in a drawer is as good as a mattress to a miser" (Andy) There is still about $747.65 in the CSIRP Bank Account. New members - David Tait of Carleton School of Journalism; Heather Kitching of CiTR Vancouver 4. Membership Fees - Both new members paid the $50 Founders Fee. Much discussion ensued. More debate is needed, but for now the membership fees ($35/$50) will stand. 5. Funding Applications - a) Canada Council - Hal just submitted an application for Radio Drama funding. b) Trillium Foundation - work progresses to get an application in to fund a workshop series. c) Canada Council - still waiting for Full Moon Over Killaloe money, although Ontario Arts council money is in. Some developmental work has happened already. d) Non-CSIRP - Victoria and Dave have received CIDA funding for another series of radio documentaries. Some negotiation is still to be done, but the request was for $40,000. 6. Membership Development - we will be doing a hospitality evening at the June National Campus and Community Radio Association conference. We should also be targeting graduating students who need career advice and connections as they leave Journalism or Broadcasting school. It is important to keep our membership broad, gathering people from all sectors of radio. We should look for opportunities to target specific groups of members. 7. Corporate Status - Time to get organized and just file the papers. They have been lawyered sufficiently. Victoria will prepare the papers tomorrow and courier to Dave for signatures. They will be submitted next week when Victoria gets back from Washington DC. 8. CRTC Review of Campus Radio - The Commission suggests that there should be a third party organization to administer a Talent development fund. CSIRP obviously supports this concept, but would like such a fund be oriented towards radio producers, rather than radio stations. It also should not be tied only to campus radio. We should stress that it is spoken word and information programming that needs support, not music. 8. Newsletter - Next one for May and the NCRA conference. We have almost run out of Issue 1. Adjourned 8:50 PM Hamilton Time. Next meeting will happen telephonically on April 7, 1999 7PM Manitoba time. =================================== Barry Rueger & Victoria Fenner Bagatelle Communications & Management (613) 725-9799 1140 Fisher Avenue, Apt. 504 Fax (613) 725-2297 Ottawa, Ontario K1Z 8M5 http://www.synapse.net/~rueger/
