Canadian Society for Independent Radio Production Meeting of the Board December 8, 1999 By Telephone: In Ottawa, Ontario: Barry Rueger, Victoria Fenner, Hal Doran, Andy Posthumus In Toronto: Philip Coulter In Brandon: Dave Kattenburg Regrets: John Muir, Chris Brooks, Minutes recorded by Barry. 1. Call to Order - The meeting was called to order by Hal at 8:17 PM Ontario Time. We're blaming Newtel for the delay. 2. Agenda - The Agenda was approved, pending changes as we get inspired. 3. Financial Statements: "We have the world to win. K. Marx" "Greed is good. H. Doran" There is still $5569.57 in the CSIRP Bank Account. Plus $10,000 + 17.26 interest in GICs. $10-11,000 is earmarked for Radiant Dissonance. After the latest newsletter we should have about $3,000 left. 4. Membership stats. 40 paid. 5 pending. 5. Philip was welcomed by the other members of the Board. Victoria presented a summarized history of the organization. 6. Andy provided highlights from today's CRTC licence hearings. Including "F***! Our annual budget wouldn't buy these guys a cup of coffee." Also, one of the applicants in Barrie is offering to fund a number of aboriginal community stations for five years. We must make it a priority to build profile in the commercial radio sector. 7. Millennial Radio Conference (Hal) - Hal recapped the concept of a radio conference in 2001. Hopeful idea: bring together representatives from every radio sector to discuss where we are going in the next decade. The Ottawans will proceed and report. 8. Charitable Status - Victoria will talk to John M to see if he will take on the task. If the "Elvis Sighting Society" can get charitable status, then so can we. 9. Trillium Foundation Application - Victoria has talked to them. They are interested in our idea of training resources for community broadcasters. They suggest that we apply for a modest amount this year, then more next year. Victoria to proceed. 10. Hal suggests a Board only CSIRP mailing list. Barry will implement. 11. CSIRP presentation to Federal Government - unavoidably delayed. This is still, though, a priority. 12. Newsletter - mailed last week. I would like the next one out by end of January. Theme shall Internet Radio. Independent Radio Production. 13. Philip provided some background on CBC Radio Three, and other youth radio projects with which he is familiar. Dave K told of a youth radio project in Nicaragua that he visited this month. Dave suggests that CSIRP could obtain funding to help this project get equipment and training to move to digital editing. 13. Next Meeting: 8 PM EST January 5, 2000. Adjourned 10:50 PM Newfoundland Time. Next meeting will happen telephonically on Thursday December 8th, 2000 9PM Manitoba time.
