Canadian Society for Independent Radio Production Meeting of the Board August 4, 1999 By Telephone: In Hamilton: Andy Posthumus, In Peterborough, Ontario: John Muir In Ottawa, Ontario:, Barry Rueger, Victoria Fenner Regrets: Dave Kattenburg, John Hall, Hal Doran Minutes recorded by Barry. 1. Call to Order - The meeting was called to order by Andy at 8:08 PM Ontario Time. Aside from losing Hal..... 2. Agenda - The Agenda was developed as we proceeded. 3. New members - someone at CBC Radio Ottawa joined... we have the cheque, but we don't know who.... Mark O'Niell from Canadian Media Guild, Chris Brooks, from Newfoundland 4. Financial Statement: "Don't drop the piggy bank -- you'll drop it and lose a quarter." GIC matures now, and can be reinvested for another month. There is still roughly $9,224 in the CSIRP Bank Account. 5. Newsletter - cost $800. We need advertisers for the next one. Projected distribution date is October. 6. Future Projects - John is working with Ellen and Michael Waterman on "Sound Escape", an acoustic ecology conference. John would like to secure funding for a peripheral radio related conference and could produce programs on acoustic ecology. Barry would like a semi academic symposium to examine the first 100 years of radio and where it's going. Motion: VF/JKM -- CSIRP endorses "Sound Escape" participation as an official CSIRP project, both artistically and documentarily. The Radio Fund should be the next big focus. Sports Broadcasting - still a great idea, not realized yet. 9. Current Projects: Progress on all these projects is proceeding. "Full Moon" -- we've got a good handle on the week's activities highlights include daily soundwalks and listening sessions, "found sound" jam session each night, and afternoon individual creative time. Tuesday night we will be exploring the acoustic environment of the Bonnechere Caves and seeing what kind of art will spontaneously erupt underground. Thursday night will be the Killaloe community benefit more traditional than most of the stuff we're doing and Friday night will be a public concert where we play our works for an unsuspecting public. You are all invited, especially for the Friday night concert come and camp. The plan is to have an outdoor CSIRP meeting the next day and use it as a time to get together for fun and planning. Registrations are a little slower than I would have liked but I'm getting one or two new requests for information every day (everybody seems to be ignoring the July 31 deadline for applications, which has now been extended). I am reasonably confident at this point that we will get at least ten paying participants, and CHCR Killaloe is planning to send at least six (we've told CHCR volunteers that they don't have to pay the registration fee since they're hosting us -- this will at least swell the numbers for the Canada Council report even though there is no financial advantage to us by doing this). We still could use a few more paying customers, so please continue to spread the word. Bells and Whistles -- I was on CBC last Monday morning about B&W. It was fun. Hildi, John M., Barb Woolner and I are still working out the program. Barry is also organizing a CKCU benefit with Hildi doing "Kits Beach Soundwalk" during the week of August 23rd. Radiant Dissonance - CD audio art project -- We are commissioning 5 artists -- Hildi Westerkamp, Michael Waterman, Andra McCartney, Ken Gregory and the sound art group Mannlicher Carcano. The other 5 will be selected from submissions received -- we have 3 submissions in already and I have heard about at least 5 more that will be coming in. Will be interesting to see what we get. Adjourned 8:47 PM Ajax Time. Next meeting will happen telephonically on Wednesday September 8, 1999 8PM Manitoba time. Chair and Social Secretary will be Hal. =================================== Barry Rueger & Victoria Fenner Bagatelle Communications & Management 22 Ashburn Dr, Nepean ON K2E 6N3 613-274-4441 Phone http://www.synapse.net/~rueger/ 613-274-4442 Fax
